We are looking here at a heavily customized Mazda RX-3, an iconic sports car built between 1971 and 1977 and using an evolutionary powertrain system for those time – the rotary engine, also to be adopted on the 2012 RX-8 and on some of the company`s upcoming models.

Now, the entire privilege of restoring such an exquisite model is in the tuner`s skilled hands. The news are far from being over, as this particular model has to perfectly fit the fancy tastes of Wataru Kato, which is the very founder of the Liberty Walk tuning company.

This means an impeccable job and the best attention when creating such a special project. And judging by the photos below, the model looks smashing indeed. It comes with an extremely wide aero kit, particularly highlighted by the massive black wheel arches and black front splitter, along with small wing mirrors, decklid lip spoiler and extremely wide wheels.

The technicians have also added their special colour at the exterior which would normally be fitted on a Ferrari or Lamborghini – the super two-tone yellow and green paintjob.

As far as the engine goes, the car`s rotary engine has also received some extensive upgrades, which makes it extremely powerful – around 200 horsepower being sent to the rear wheels. You can also feast your eyes on the media gallery below!

And even if this is a thing of a past, it was brought back to life by a handful of American tuners who decided to make it quite special by adding a wide body kit with standout features.

The installation was carried out by Final Form USA and Fujita Engineering, both teams creating the car`s widebody kit, which will make it a real head-turners while cruising the streets in big style.

The car`s top features refer to the massive carbon-fiber splitter which is perfectly complemented by the new bumper with large canards, increasing thus its front-end downforce.

Other standout features also include the front quarter panels with air extractors resembling of shark fins, adding carbon fiber side skirts, flared rear wheel arches, prominent rear bumper and wide diffuser. Additionally, you can also install a huge rear wing thanks to the new mounting points.

Under the hood, this modified Mazda RX-7 remains stock, meaning that is packs a 1.3-liter twin-turbo rotary engine, with power output to range between 252 horsepower and 276 horsepower.

The Mazda MX-5 looks even hotter with the bespoke styling bits surrounding the front grille and rear bumper, adding some mechanical bits that announce an important power boost under the hood.

Speaking about performance, the all-new MX-5 is now perfect for some serious and loud take-off, thanks to the new power kit. But Neil McKay, CEO at BR, better explains the makings of the Mazda MX-5.

“Given the relatively high weight of the NC variants of the MX-5, these cars need as much help as they can get to satisfy the needs of the performance enthusiast, but with a priority on retaining everyday drivability from a smaller capacity engine. I am delighted to say that we have achieved these twin goals by utilizing BBR’s vast experience with normally aspirated tuning to deliver a wallet-friendly conversion with a minimal insurance loading.”

The technicians have thus installed what they called the Super 175 power package, consisting of a new camshaft with lift and timing specifications, adding as well a 4 into 1 tubular stainless steel exhaust manifold, high-performance exhaust system and an ECU remapping. And the power at 3,000 rpm is purely mind-blowing for a Mazda MX-5.

We are looking here at a 1.8-liter engine, now capable of developing 175 horsepower and 194 Nm of torque, which makes it extremely fast from 0 to 100 km/h, and that despite the fact that the tuner has not yet released the official figures. We are looking here at 39 horsepower and 15 Nm of torque more than the standard 175 horsepower and 143 lb-ft of torque.

In terms of pricing, the BBR Mazda MX-5 Super 175 Package costs 1,995 pounds, which is a real bargain, by-the-way.

But sometimes, even iconic models can receive some new goodies from aftermarket shops, which will make them complete from every point of view.

Take for instance this gorgeous red Mazda MX-5 which has received the new alloy wheels or the updated lowering springs from BBR Tuning, which reduces its ride height by 30mm and makes it more stable on the road.

But the real goodies are found under the hood, where each engine from the lineup can be had with some extra horses. For instance, the 1.5-liter can be packed with the BBR Super 160 package and a remapped ECU. That adds up 21 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque to the overall power. This package, along with the Super 175+ can be had at 495 GBP.

On the other hand, the 2.0-liter engine can receive the BBR Super 175+ package, with the same remapped ECU, raising its power by 17 horsepwoer and 10 lb-ft of torque.

Finally, there is also the BBR Super 190 package, available at 1995 GBP, fitted on the same 2.0-liter engine and consisting of a cold air intake, custom exhaust system manifold, or stainless steel sports exhaust system. The increase is quite significant: 30 horsepower and 24 lb-ft of torque, for a total of 190 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque.

And this Mazda CX-5 has also received such a Japanese treatment from the Rowen Japan tuning company. The aftermarket specialists might have turned it into something artistic, but I personally find it just another samurai-like body kit.

We are dealing here with new bumpers and side skirts with aero blades, twisted front apron with the LED lights and spoiler lip, new spoilers on the roof and tailgate, strange rear diffuser with integrated tailpipes, over-fenders, as well as the 20-inch SCHWERT SC6 alloy wheels, courtesy to the same Rowen Japan tuner.

However, the most interesting part in the whole deal is the cost that this body kit is coming with, meaning $24,000. Add up the sport exhaust system or the LED set and you would have to pay another $1,000. But as I have already said in a previous article, it is all about the taste here that other people might have when dealing with such strange body kits.

All their analysis seems to be formed around a few basic ideas Mazda gave them to work with and the results are already promising. BBR appreciates the workable potential of the engine to a well deserved extra 200HP.

This means that if you decide to take you brand new Mazda MX-5 to BBR Tuning they will work their magic fingers around your motor and give it an extra 200 horses to work with. Is this achievable though? We’ll find out soon enough!

“Our objective with the all-new MX-5 is to achieve the same 200HP output” is what Neil Mckay from BBR stressed. He then added that this would only be the tip of the iceberg and that further individual design plans are to be had.

The British tuner has released a single photo of the future build and as such leaves much to discover and ask altogether, but is quite a promising start per se, owning to the fact that the car does look nice indeed with the newly fitted body kit and the 10 spoke black rims.

It comes in two stages and adds a StarChip ECU unit, high-flow injectors, a new intercooler and most important, an Eaton MP62 supercharger.

The Stage One improves the total output of the 2.0-liter MK3 engine to 235hp and 257Nm of torque while the 2.0-liter MK3.5 gets a power boost to 241hp and 257Nm of torque. The 1.8-liter MK3 engine also benefits from some improvements which increase the figures to 217hp and 238Nm of torque.

If that’s not enough, there is the Stage Two pack which adds a high-flow air filter, a new exhaust manifold and a reworked ECU, all these boosting the numbers to 252hp (2.0 MK3), 258hp (2.0 MK3.5) and 231hp (1.8 MK3).

“BBR is delighted to announce some exciting new additions to its successful range of BBR-Cosworth supercharger conversions that offer even more performance options for discerning MX-5 owners,” says the tuner.

The Stage One kit starts at £4,295 while the Stage Two begins from £5,455.

In terms of power, the Japanese model gets a power boost from 158hp to 180hp and 215Nm of torque.

In order to squeeze the extra power, BBR opted for a StarChip ECU, high-flow air filter, stainless steel rear silencer and exhaust manifold, high-flow sports cat and more.

“Designed to meet the demand for a lower cost engine upgrade that delivers extra response, power, driveability and excitement,” says the tuner.

BBR also claims that, thanks to the additional torque and revised throttle with a faster response, the MX-5 feels much quicker and more exciting.

The performance tuning kit provided by BBR for the Mazda MX-5 is priced at £1,995 in the UK.
